After School Flyers

This month has been yet another science-heavy month.
As we finished up our study of learning all about plants and trees and the cycles of the seasons we also looked into space and alien life and began our new chapter on how bridges and skyscrapers are built.

There were a lot of new technical words to describe how and why leaves change color with the seasons but the students tackled the topic very well and showed a very impressive understanding of the subject.
So we were quite comfortable moving onto "Why Do Bridges Arch?".
So far we have learnt about some of the amazing architecture that can be found all around the world brushing up on a bit of geography while we're at it! We'll be looking to do some construction work of our own to test what we've learnt about structure.
With the general theme of the month being 'Space', it was clear we were going to talk about aliens at some point.
It was interesting to hear some of the ideas the students had about what aliens might be like and what the students would do if they ever encountered one.
We also got our hands dirty making our own clay version of the solar system and painting it too.

We also had some fun trying some different experiments that showed the power of gravity. Through some unusual exercises we experienced what it would be like to live on a planet with a much stronger gravity pull than Earth. Very strange!

Of course as summer hits harder it's getting hotter and hotter each week so as one of our crafts we decided to make our own "uchiwa" hand fans with our own summery designs!

Looking forward to lots more fun stuff as we head into August ready for more science and English!

After School Flyers

Flyers – Kids Box 5

In the Kids box series, we have a lot of chances to talk and share different things, all while learning new vocabulary and practicing basic skills. But from time to time an interesting experiment will come along. This particular day, the Flyers(For today their names are S1,S2,S3,S4, and S5) were really interested to know why there were eggs in the classroom. Here we observed, discussed and shared what we thought was going to happen. Then when all was said and done, we recorded it all just like a scientist would. Take a look and see what we have done.

After discussing what we thought was going to happen and listen to the procedure, we started our experiment.

We covered one egg with fluoride toothpaste. “Ugh! The smell is ...” said S1(student 1)

They put their eggs into the vinegar. “ Wow, look at the bubbles!” said S2 “but the toothpaste egg has no bubbles” said S3

S4 “ I want to watch to see what happens after 5 minutes!” 5minutes later : S5 “Oh! Wow! It rolled!”

Now that the observations are done. It is time to write everything up!

The Flyers always love to get hands on! Even if they have to smell things like vinegar and touch toothpaste with their fingers!
