Penguins @

We were all very excited to walk out into the lobby one day and find some of our moms putting up the dolls for Hina-matsuri.
Since we could not help with those dolls we made some of our own.

We drew some faces and put it onto our cup 'bodies' before we used colorful paper to make kimonos.

"Where are your eyes?" "How many noses?"

Our last step was to put our crowns and then we were all ready to go!

When we had finished dressing the dolls we were almost ready for the festival.

Butterflies @

For Valentine's Day Butterflies wrote a message to their family.
They made a card and decorated the card with many tissue papers.
They made flowers out of pink and purple paper on top of a heart.
Butterflies class really enjoyed making these cards.

Mommy and daddy and grand ma and grand pa and ..."

Geckos @

The Giant Turnip!!

Hello Everyone! We hope you managed to rid your homes of evil spirits and demons over Setsubun, and that Valentine's Day brought extra love into your lives!
The theme was Fairy Tales and Myths, and the Geckos focused on an old favourite, "The Giant Turnip", a story popular the world over! We began by making a giant turnip of our own, but crumpling papers from old pamphlets into balls and stuffing them into a plastic bag and making one giant, round ball, and we attached a stem and leaves to complete our turnip. We then used this turnip during circle time to reenact the story, with the children coming up one at a time to join the line and yelling "PULL!!!" as they pretended to pull the turnip, and "We did it!!" as it came out of the ground.

Our next activity was to pull some large daikon radishes, that we had planted as seeds some months before, out of the school garden. We began by examining the plants, talking about the shape, colour and texture of the leaves, and also wonder about the part of the plant what was hidden in the ground - what colour was it? Was it big or small? Then, just like in the story, we tried to pull them out of the ground. One by one the children joined forces and, on the count of "1,2,3!, pulled the radishes out of the ground. We then discussed the colour and texture of the radish, noting the attached roots and dirt.

The we cut off the leaves and used them to do rubbings with crayons. This was the first time the Geckos had done a rubbing like this, and a big part of the activity was knowing and being able to hold the crayon horizontally and rub across the paper instead of holding it vertically. It proved difficult at first, having to first gently flatten the leaf onto the table, then place the paper on top and operate the crayon, however by the end almost all the children achieved great results, with a few requiring a little help. They were amazed at the "magic" of the picture that appeared on their white paper!

The last activity was the yummiest part - we ate the radishes!!! Eri chopped them into small bite-sized sticks and we tried them first plain, and then with a little salt sprinkled on! We talked about the taste and texture, and everyone said that the radishes were "yummy!!" It was great to be able to eat something from our own garden!

Linking all of these together produced one long story for the Geckos, with many opportunities to exercise their different sensory and fine motor skills!
See you next time!!

Rabbits @

All About Setsubun !

In the Rabbits class, late January and early was all about the Setsubun Festival ! We decided to make DEMON masks to celebrate this event....... First we painted the base for our masks, using either red or yellow paint. We dipped small sponges into paint, and then spread color all over the paper plates, covering up all the white spaces. This required some very fine hand co-ordination and a lot of patience ! Then we had a lot of fun pasting on the Demon's face parts; including eyebrows, eyes, noses, and mouths with sh arp pointy teeth. Although we did an example demonstration, the children got very "creative" and interesting in their placement of the parts !

We are quite proud of the finished masks ! There were a lot of steps involved in making them, and we are glad to say that they are HAPPY and COLORFUL demons, and not SCARY ones !

At the Birthday Party on January 30th, we practiced throwing plastic balls (representing beans) at Suzy Demon, in order to get used to the REAL event on February 4th. The act of picking up and throwing the balls with one hand was a good movement for the children to practice.

Even after Setsubun was over, we still enjoyed playing "Demons" in the classroom. In these pictures the children are throwing balls of scrunched up newspaper at Shiori Demon, and then we all had a turn of wearing the Demon's mask. Everyone can say "Go away, Demon!" in a loud voice. Hopefully there will be no more demons until next year !

Zebras @

Zebra’s Shopping Excursion

We have spent all year learning about healthy eating habits in the Zebra classroom. We know how important it is to put good things into our body and always eat our vegetables first. But what about fruit? We have learnt that fruit is so very good for our bodies and decided that we would like to go an excursion to the supermarket to buy some fruit. This excursion gives us the opportunity to practice our English outside of school, gives us confidence in following rules to keep us safe outside, practice using real money to buy things, and encourages healthy eating.
Thank you to the mummy and daddy helpers!

Before we left for the excursion we remembered how dangerous it can be on the roads outside. We promised to keep on the sidewalk and to look out for cars. Are you ready, Zebras? “YES WE ARE!”

On the way to the supermarket we stopped on a bridge. It was fun to look at our shadows dancing on the ground!

Group photo! What a beautiful day for a walk!

We all listened carefully to Rachel as she told us what we can (and cannot) do in the supermarket. We looked at all different types of food like fish and meat and vegetables.

We were very careful not to drop the fruit and decided who would share their fruit with who.

It's great to practice our English outside of school, but we do still live in Japan. The Zebras had the choice to say “thank you” or “arigatou” and most Zebras said both!

There was so much fruit to eat! We gobbled our lunch up quickly so we could gobble up our fruit. Delicious!

We are so good at sharing so we were all able to try many different fruits. Yum!
