Frogs

Fishes!!

Hello!! June is a very busy month for the Frogs, with so many exciting things happening! Our theme this month is “Under the Sea”, and we have made two different kinds of fish using two very different methods!
The first fish was painted using sponges and red, blue and yellow tempera paints that had been watered down. The paints appear really bright when you paint them on, but dry to give very sandy, “beachy” colours.

Although we do a lot of painting with the tempera paints, it was the first time we had painted with sponges and really runny, watery paint, so it was a new texture and experience for the Frogs. The primary colours red, blue and yellow paints combine to make the secondary colours of purple, green, orange and the tertiary colour brown, and the Frogs really enjoy mixing the colours on the paper and their hands to create new hues.

We always paint together and share the paints and sponges, and in this activity it was important to not mix the colours in the paint dish, and to try and keep the paints as clean as possible.

The second fish was done using the same red, yellow and blue paints, but this time we painted paper plates with cotton buds (q-tips) as a brush! This meant we had to use our finger muscles to hold the cotton bud, and the Frogs enjoyed drawing lines and making dots!

Once again, the Frogs tried as hard as they could not to mix the colours together in the paint tray, and loved the new colours that appeared when they mixed them on the paper plate!

The more we painted, the more we got paint on our fingers and hands, and gradually we forgot about the cotton buds and just used our hands….!!! Great sensory workout!!

Our finished fish!

Frogs

For Father’s Day we made really groovy photo frames out of wide popsicle sticks! This time we had to paint straight onto the sticks with a paint brush, which meant one hand had to hold the stick still so the other hand could paint – very tricky, lots of fine motor and cognitive skills required!!

Wood is also a very different medium to paper, and the colours appear differently too, but the Frogs were still able to mix them to create their own rainbows!

After we painted the sticks, we let them dry, and a “magic fairy” (thank you, Eri!!) glued them into a rectangle frame. Our next job was to glue butterflies, dragonflies, ladybugs and bees onto the frame! The children had to judge for themselves how much glue they needed, then choose where on the frame to stick the insect!

This is the finished product!!

The last thing we had to do was the card. We coloured the card with crayons, and decorated the envelope with ink pads and fingerprints!!

See you next time!!! lots of love, Frogs!!

The life cycle of a butterfly.

Pre K Zebras have been enjoying the warm summer weather and outside play. We have been looking for some caterpillars to bring inside the classroom to help us understand and illustrate the life cycle of a butterfly.

We found so many caterpillars in the broccoli plants. They are really cute but so small!

There were so many that everyone had a chance to pick one up (gently) and put it in the `caterpillar house`.

While we were outside we all looked at how much our Cosmos flowers have grown.

They are so tall and pretty! Well done for watering them every day Zebras!

Now the caterpillars are living inside the Zebra classroom. We`re watching them grow bigger and bigger as they eat lettuce, cabbage, and other scrap leaves from the kitchen. Maybe we will even see a chrysalis soon!

KA Dolphins came to the KB class and chose a KB partner to begin the making of the Dragon!

After listening to instructions from the teachers, KA and KB took strips of cloth material and sat down together.

We put the strips of cloth through the holes to create the Dragon so that we can proudly show it for Takatsuki Festival!

“The Hundred Languages of Children”

1. Abstract drawing

2. Block building

Does it look like something different from another side, or by looking down from the top, or by looking up from the bottom? Finally, use paper and a pencil to sketch your construction. It is essential that you sketch your idea rather than a sketch of the blocks.

Tomoko/Yukiko
