子ども達のために、私(地球)を大切に…Orange class -Senri Yamada School-
For our tech time, we use the iPads to go onto the kidsa-z app to practice their spelling. Once they have reviewed how to spell a set number of words, they can move onto a spelling game! Orange class have always enjoyed playing on this spelling app, particularly the ‘Letter Fall’ game.
Time is devoted to spelling and phonics every lesson and I have really seen an improvement in their interest and confidence in spelling. They are given a particular sound and give me various words that include that sound, they always give great examples! We then have a spelling test every week based on the given sound and suggested words.
Orange class have been tasked with various creative projects throughout the year. The most recent was ‘packing your suitcase for a holiday’. They had to think of a location, 10 items they would bring, and they later drew their suitcase with all its contents. They were enthusiastic and creative when discussing the contents with their partner.

In class we talked about the history of the Olympics. We also talked about what a logo was, and the famous logo of the Olympics, the 5 rings representing the continents. Afterwards, we made our own logos for if the Olympics came to Osaka!
Once everyone made their logos we did an exhibition where everyone talked about their design. We talked about what they included to show it was for Osaka, and of course made sure to include the signature rings. Once it was presented the students were able to ask the presenter questions about their picture as well!
Everyone had really original and clever designs, and they seemed to have a lot of fun making them. If they happen to move the Olympics from Tokyo to Osaka, we know who to call to make the new logo! Great job, Purple Class!

We started by reviewing the past tense and writing some examples on colored cards.
Then, we used those cards to play a board game. When you picked up a card, you had to make up a sentence using that word in the past tense.
Finally, using the cards from the game, we wrote some sentences in our journals.

A-Z online activities took place in class as well, and the children tried out the new program on the Ipads for the first time.
The class also began writing their occupation projects, where the class picked an interesting job, and will also draw a picture diagram to go with it.

We follow the chapters in the textbook each lesson day. Furthermore, for each topic, we try various activities to understand the content better and to make the lessons more fun.
This week's topic was 'Thing's in the House'. First we tried making sentences with new vocabulary with our partners. Then we played ''Guess What?" game and children took turns to draw and guess some objects on the whiteboard.
Everyone also drew a house in their journals and thought about different objects in various rooms in our own house.
The best part of our lesson is that children enjoy all sorts of activities and are always willing to participate!

For the first few minutes of every after school lesson, we gather on the carpet and enjoy chatting and catching up with our friends. On this day, we talked about our plans for the winter holiday.
We regularly review the letter types, writing lines, spacing, and posture when we do writing and spelling activities in our journals. We learned the grammar point `used to/ didn't use to` and wrote two sentences using each.
On Mondays, we really look forward to using the iPads for the last few minutes of our lesson. During this time, we use the Spelling City and Cambridge Online Activities programs to improve our spelling, listening, and reading comprehension skills.

The Purple Class learned all about robotics and how they help us to make our daily lives easier. Here, the children are planning out their robots together, designing them, and making a list of what items we will need to assemble them.
Using the grammar sentences "used for" and "used to" we described how we would use our robots to help us. We worked as a team and communicated how we wanted to assemble it together.
Finally, in teams they presented their robots in front of the class. We talked about what the robot could do, how we made it, and also how it could make our lives better. Afterwards, the other team asked questions about their robot and the presenting team answered together.

In the past quarter, the students have been learning about natural disasters. As an end of the unit project they worked in teams to build paper mache volcanoes. The first step, they crumbled the newspapers and taped them together into a dome shape. Next, they dipped the strips of newspapers into the glue and water mixture and covered the dome. We left them to dry for two days.
In the next class, the students painted their volcanoes with red and brown paint to create that volcano feel.
The students prepared the “magma solution” with vinegar and red food coloring. We took the volcano mountains outside into the sandbox, the students added some dinosaurs near their volcano mountains and set the magma to work! They put some baking soda into the mouth of the mountain, and poured the solution in. They were all excited to see it exploded! The lava got on the dinosaurs and some children saved them from being burnt by the hot lava!
It was an exciting project as the students all got their hands on it and with much anticipation built up to the day they finally got to create the hot lava. They were still talking about it even a few weeks later!

Study time. The children are busy writing words in their journals. These words are either from the Cambridge textbook or a list from the Spelling City program. The children will take some of these words and try to write them in a sentence. This is a fun activity and helps the children to be creative and unafraid of making mistakes.
Game time. The children are enjoying playing a game using the words from earlier in the lesson. In this game, children must work together to unscramble sentences on the board.
Technology time. The children enjoy using the Spelling City program on the iPads. At times they work alone and other times in small groups. Either way they are encouraged to help out their classmates if they are having any difficulty. They may find some of the words they used in the lesson and now be able to read them with confidence. As a bonus, the games are a lot of fun for everyone!

The children are learning about compound words. Two different words that become one. They had to find the images and go back and write the correct word. Everyone had to search around the classroom and decipher the meanings.
The children made an animal booklet. They had to choose an animal, find out the information about that animal, then write about it. They all presented each one to their friends after and talked about the animals they chose.

A key aim this year was to introduce ideas that the children were then able to take over.
This led to some very personal designs and crafts.
Today we completed a number of projects, such as a calendar and paperclay sculptures.
The children will each be bringing home crafts and a board game that we hope you can enjoy as a family. We hope that you will come up with some new rules to add to these.

Have you ever tried to keep a newspaper sheet up, without using your hands?
How many triangles can you make with 21 popsicle sticks?
Although we have a wealth of lessons and projects planned, we also prepare short activities that will raise energy, or allow for a quieter moment between games. The gym equipment has been useful for obstacle courses and a little relaxation. The children tried their hands at sudoku also. This was simplified by using colours instead of numbers.
Today all the children were decorating their peg boards. We then used our tiles and meeples (game tokens) to create a board game/calendar.
The result were varied, but there was a good level of concentration and some rather messy hands by the end of it.
本日、子ども達は有孔ボードにデコレーションを施し、タイルやミープル(ゲームの駒)を使ってボードゲームやカレンダーを作成しました。
出来上がりは多種多様でしたが、集中して作業をした結果、手が汚れてしまうのはご愛嬌ですね。
We introduced two new board games designed especially for summer school. ’Twenty One’ is a race to collect 21 cubes of various colours. ‘Bridge Rescue’ is a race to build bridges to evacuate an island before a volcano erupts. Today, the children prepared their materials and played, using the basic rules. Tomorrow, it is their turn to build on this and create their own rules and expand on the game.
サマースクールのために作った2つの新しいボードゲームを紹介します。
「トゥエンティワン」はカラフルな21個のキューブを集めるゲームです。
「ブリッジレスキュー」は火山噴火前に橋を作り、島から脱出するゲームです。
本日、子ども達には自分たちで教材を作り、基本的なルールで遊んでもらいました。
明日は、これを基に独自のルールを作り、ゲームをより発展させていきます。
Water play has been a very popular part of the week and, sadly, today was our last day for this. It has kept us cool and been a big part of building the positive relationships between the children, and also the teachers.
水遊びはこの数日間、特に人気のアクティビティでしたが、残念ながら今日が最後の日となってしまいました。
暑さ対策としてのみならず、水遊びを通して先生たちが子ども達と仲もぐっと近付きましたね!

These simple activities bring energy and fun to learning and reviewing the language.
Over the course of the week, we have seen children of all ages drawn to the Kapla blocks. These wooden pieces have been used to construct tall towers, bridges and marble runs, as well as helping us to learn about counterweights and balance.
We used popsicle sticks to create stars and squares. These were held together by each piece pressing on the others, so no glue or tape was required.
There were lots of shrieks and laughter during water play, so we are looking forward to another day of this tomorrow.
Today, the children decorated their peg boards and some also wanted to paint on the paper they made on Tuesday. Having already made marble runs with the pegboards, next we will be using them to make a vertical board games.
ポプシクル・スティック(アイスの棒状の工作材)を使って、星や四角の形を作ります。
上手く組み合わせることで糊やテープを使わずに固定することが出来ました。
水遊びの時間には、たくさんの歓声と笑い声が溢れていました。また明日が、待ちきれないですね!
また本日は有効ボードを飾り付けたり、火曜日に作った紙に色を塗ったりもしました。
有効ボードでは、既にビー玉転がし台を作りましたが、今度は垂直ボードゲームを作る予定です。
We already made paper, but today it was time to add inclusions. These were splashes of colour paper, glitter, feathers… anything that could merge nicely with the pulp. The children were very focused and worked well together to create very unique sheets. They will be dry and ready to take home on Saturday.
紙作りは既に行っていましたが、今日はそこに含有物を加えていきます。
散らした色紙、ラメや羽などパルプとうまく混ざるものでしたら何でも構いません。
子ども達は集中力も高く、協力して、それぞれのユニークな紙を作っていました。
土曜日までには乾きますので、お家に持ち帰る予定です。
Having already explored strong structures and how materials can support each other, we set the challenge to build a paper bridge that could span at least 1 metre. Teams of children were given a budget of 1000 yen (we used a Montessori cube to represent this). Each material had a price and children took turns to visit our teachers to purchase these for their team. Change was given in hundred squares and ten bars. This restriction, meant that the children had to consider how to avoid waste and plan their design with care.
The resulting bridges were very mixed, but we learnt a lot in the process. We look forward to trying this again in the coming days. Perhaps we will make the distant longer and the bridges will have to support the weight of a toy car. It was great to see the children working so well together.
出来上がった橋は様々でしたが、その過程で多くの事を学びました。また近日中に再チャレンジする予定です。
きっとより長く、おもちゃの車が通れるくらいの強さを持つものが出来上がることになるでしょう。
子ども達が協力して取り組む姿は本当に素晴らしいものでした。

We made a game to review colours and clothing. The children span an arrow to choose an item of clothing and rolled a dice to select the colour.
The first team to place all their full set of clothes on the line, wins. Watch out for the wind and rain though!
3日目となる水曜日、まず小さい子たちのクラスが洗濯をしている間、大きい子たちのクラスはお医者さんを訪ねました。
あるクラスでは、色と衣服のおさらいをするためのゲームをしました。まず矢印を回して衣類の種類を選び、サイコロを転がして色を選びます。
最初に物干しに衣類一式を干せたチームの勝利です!おっと、雨と風には気を付けて!
Today was the first day of water play. While we may miss our pool time, with the hot weather, it was a lovely day to get soaked.
Even the teachers found it refreshing, though some were not planning on getting attacked with wet sponges.
本日は水遊びの1日目です。残念ながらプール遊びはできませんが、この炎天下はびしょ濡れになるには最高です。
先生たちにとっても涼しくて最高だったのですが、濡れたスポンジで攻撃されるなんてことはちょっと想定外でした。
The pegs we prepared on the first day of summer school were ready, so we started to create our own marble runs. We used the pegs and platforms to create the route and then strips of card-stock to make a smooth track. The children got quite creative with the challenge to make the marble take as long a time as possible to complete the run.
サマースクール初日に準備をした木栓で、いよいよビー玉転がし台を作り始めます。まず木栓と土台でルートを作り、細長い厚紙でよりスムーズに転がる様にします。
子ども達はより長い時間ビー玉が転がっていられる様、様々な工夫を凝らしていました。
Our paper is still trying, so today we used newspaper to make homemade paper clay. We used a sock to strain out the water, and then mixed in starch, glue, salt, baking soda and vinegar. The result was a slightly sticky, but malleable clay. The children got to make whatever they wanted. Once the clay dries in a day or two, we hope to paint our sculptures.
紙作りはまだ途中ですが、今日は新聞紙で手作りの粘土を作りました。水に浸けていた新聞紙を靴下を使って濾し取り、でんぷん、糊、塩、重曹、酢と混ぜます。
その結果、少しべたべたはしていますが、しっかりとした粘土が出来上がりました。子ども達はその粘土で何でも好きなものを作りました。
1~2日後に乾けば、色付けをする予定です。

Among the more active lessons, we are also setting mental challenges and mini-science experiments. Today, we practiced sequencing, and tried to make a pyramid out of table tennis balls. These were fixed together into two lines of four, and two sets of six. It was a lot trickier than it seems. Lets see if anyone can solve it by the end of the week. The children also discovered that weak objects, such as paper cups, can be very strong in the right combination.
たくさんのレッスンの一部として、メンタルチャレンジやミニ科学実験も行います。
本日は、ピンポン玉でピラミッドを作ることにチャレンジしました。
ピンポン玉4つが2列とピンポン玉6つが2セット、という組み合わせから成っているのですが、これが見た目以上に難しいのです。今週中に誰が出来るようになるのか見ものですね。
また紙コップの様にもろい物が、正しい組み合わせで強くなるということも学びました。
Tissue boxes and table tennis balls became a fun game as we raced to empty our box before our opposite team. We put our creeping skills to the test as we attempted to ’steal the bacon’ from a blindfolded guard. One of our gym gamers involved throwing and dodging. It will be nice to cool down with water play tomorrow.
様々な体を動かすアクティビティも行いました。
あるクラスでは、相手チームよりどちらが先にティッシュ箱のピンポン玉を空っぽにできるのか競争しました。
また目隠しをした番人から「ベーコンを盗め」というゲームでは、忍びのスキルを試しました。
そしてジムでドッジボールを行ったクラスもあります。
明日からの水遊びに備え、本日は少し落ち着いた活動となりました。
We used iPads to play a game that taught us about the process of recycling paper, from our bins at home to creating new paper.
Having soaked some shredded paper since yesterday, we were ready to try making some ourselves.
After blending, the pulp gave us a lovely tactile experience. Not everyone wanted to get their hands dirty at first, but this quickly changed after a little encouragement. The whole process was very simple. We used two picture frames and door mesh to make our mold and deckle, then used sponges to remove excess water. We will leave the paper for a day or so, in order to dry. Next time, we are looking forward to introducing colours and add other items to our paper.

One of our projects is to explore marble runs. Whether through more active games (racing a marble through a pipe), or constructing tracks (using any materials we could find), the children learnt about key principles for their future designs.
プロジェクトの1つにビー玉転がしがあります。より活動的なゲーム(パイプ内でのビー玉競争)や(使えるものを何でも使って)道を作ったりし、子ども達は今後の計画に向けた基礎を学びました。
Today was also about preparation. The children each have dowel pegs, tiles and a peg board to use in a number of projects this week. Our first task was to create platforms using the pegs and tiles. We will wait a day or two for these to dry.
今日は準備の1日でもありました。それぞれが有効ボード、タイル、木栓を使い、今週のたくさんのプロジェクトへと備えます。最初のお題は木栓とタイルで土台を作る事でした。2~3日、乾くのを待ちます。
The children have a lot of energy, so we are happy to provide a wealth of games and resources to enjoy. In ’separation anxiety’ the children sorted colour cubes (some classes put their chopsticks skills to good use). We enjoyed gym games and outside play. We used fans to keep a strip of plastic ribbon in the air. It was harder than it seemed, so we also used the fans to cool down afterwards!
子ども達は元気いっぱいでしたので、より有意義な時間が過ごせる様、たくさんのゲームや資材を使ってもらいました。
「セパレーション・アングザエティ」というゲームではカラーキューブを仕分けました(あるクラスではお箸を上手に使いました)。
ジムでのゲームや外遊びも楽しみました。
また団扇を使い、プラスチックのリボンテープを長く浮かせられるかを試しました。見た目以上に大変でしたので、その後は同じ団扇を使って、しばらく涼むことになりました。
Where do old newspapers go?
Another theme of the week is recycling. We hope to find fun, educational experiences, using everyday materials, that the children can continue with at home.
We are using a lot of newspapers. The sheets become islands to stand on, paths to follow, construction materials, etc. These are then ripped up and added to a tub full of water for another project. What will it all become? Let’s find out over the next few days.
古新聞はどこへ行くの?今週のもう1つのテーマはリサイクルです。日常の物を使い、お家でも続けられるよう、楽しく学べる経験となれば、と考えています。
たくさんの新聞紙は、降り立つことのできる島や辿る事のできる道、建築資材等へと姿を変えます。そしてその後、次のプロジェクトのため、細かく破られ、水の入った桶に入れられます。
いったい何になるのでしょうか?!それは数日後までのお楽しみです。

This month in Purple Class (Movers) we are making maps! Everyone planned out and brainstormed with a partner about what they wanted to do. Everyone had different types of maps, some were of their rooms, some were of places they know, some were things they made up. The goal of the maps is so they can write directions and find something on the maps.
All of the maps are turning out really well. Everyone had a lot of fun thinking about what kind of map they wanted to make and what they wanted to find in it. Some students wanted us to find keys, places, and we had one student who wanted to find where their Nintendo Switch was in their room. Everyone was really creative, and everyone really enjoyed it. Great job, Purple Class!

For the month of June we have been studying our solar system in unit 2 of Kids box 6. The children had the opportunity to create their own solar systems, and present to the class their favorite planets, facts, and reasons why they are fascinated by space.
The class also had the opportunity to research and explore space by using our school iPads during tech time. The “What’s in Space” app has a variety of interesting activities which teach the children facts, and educational information about space through interactive play, videos, and fun facts.
The students have also been preparing for July's YLE practice test through reading, writing, speaking, and listening exercises. This week we practiced reading comprehension and explored proactive ways to scan, and choose appropriate answers to each sentence.
