Recently we spent a lesson brushing up on our reading comprehension skills by reading a fictional story about Clara, a girl in Italy who accidentally invents eyeglasses! We started by reading through the story together as a class. This allowed everyone to get the gist of the story and practice reading the more difficult words together. Next we worked through it again in pairs. One person would point to the words and the other would read before switching over after each paragraph. By doing this, the children were able to both read and listen to the story. As we read, we also asked each other simple comprehension questions to deepen our understanding of the story. We kept an eye out for words and grammar structures that we have learned recently. Finally we listened to the story on the CD, to enjoy hearing it and to try following the text with our fingers and eyes. After reading the story, the children were challenged to summarize and re-tell the story in their own words, a great activity for building speaking confidence and vocabulary.
