The Tuesday and Friday Flyers group have been working really hard during their lessons this year. We're already working through our sixth unit, and everybody is enjoying the interesting and challenging topics.

As the Flyers are able to spend some time on the computers during their Friday lessons, either working on Spelling City or Oxford Discover online, we've been using some time each Tuesday to familiarise ourselves with the Cambridge Young Learners of English tests. This has been good preparation for the practice test that will be happening in July.


Each lesson, we start off by reviewing one part of the YLE tests as a group. We discuss what the children must do in order to be successful, the layout and style of each question, and any helpful advice or strategies to help them during the real thing.

The children share their ideas about how they can achieve the best results possible. It's excellent practice for them, and especially helpful to have a prior understanding of what they should be expecting in July and November.


After reviewing one of the sections, we practice using all the techniques previously discussed. We decide how long we think we should spend on the question, and then use a timer to help us practice trying to complete as much as possible in a specified amount of time.

We use the boards to separate the children to give them an idea of the kind of atmosphere they should expect when taking the tests. This is a really great way to practice answering all the different types of questions with no pressure.

When our time is up, the children swap their answer sheets with the person next to us. They are able to compare their answers to their friends, which allows all the children to help each other, and discuss their answers.

We review each question individually, talking about what the answer is and how we knew it. This will be invaluable for the children during their real tests, as they will be able to recognise the different styles of questions from their studies.

I have really enjoyed working with the Flyers so far this year, and look forward to progressing through our student books. I look forward to our practice test in July so the children can see how well they're working and how far they've already come in such a short space of time.
