Movers-Takatsuki Ibaraki

We started the Movers year by looking at family; what is an aunt/ uncle/ grandmother/ grandfather? The kids were very enthusiastic sharing about the different people in their families and understood why we have two sets of grandparents. After this we talked about who their friends are; they drew a picture and wrote about their friends, and then looked at what makes friends different from family?

Following this, we also explored the differences between the city and the countryside/ flats and houses; it seemed nobody had ever lived in the countryside so the children talked about people they knew who lived there. To discuss flats and houses the children talked about their own homes and learnt new words such as balcony, basement and underground parking. At the end they each drew their dream house/ flat, some even had a slide from the top going into a pool!

Next, we examined what ‘primary colours’ are by reading about how they make secondary colours; we put this into action and mixed paint together to make the different colours to paint into our journals and onto paper plates to make funny faces! The kids had so much fun doing this!

Furthermore, we have looked into animals such as honeybees and eagles and learnt facts about them as well as discussing which animals will make good pets and why? To link this to homes we also looked at where animals live if not with us? This introduced the concept of animal reserves to them and why are they are needed.

Also, we investigated the use of ‘always’, ‘sometimes’ and ‘never’ by looking at our weekly routines and what we always/ sometimes/ never do on certain days or every day! We linked this to seasons and what we can do in different seasons; the kids are learning a lot more about the different seasons such as winter has short days and long nights!

Finally we explored our heart beats and located our pulse! The kids learnt what a pulse is and where to find it; they had a lot of fun feeling once it was located for them! We explored how the pulse changes by first measuring our pulse when we were sitting down and then how it gets faster when we do something that requires more energy; the kids jumped for a whole minute and then measured their pulse. They had a lot of fun comparing their own pulse from when they were sat down to when they jumped for a minute as well as comparing with their friends!

The kids wrote about their favourite season!

Next they draw a picture of the season they wrote about!

We’ve been having a lot of fun in the Friday Flyers Class.
We’ve been making some artistic posters involving the whole class.

Students often bring in items for show and tell. During this lesson one student brought in paints and shared them with the class.

We have been having fun learning about music and we spent one lesson using recycled materials to make drums.

Over the past month the children of the Senior Flyers class have been learning about different health problems and giving advice to help those problems. They learned the vocabulary and the sentences that would help them with a doctor's visit.
Flyersクラスでは病院へ行く時に役立つフレーズや単語を習いました。

"I've got a headache." You should sit still"
"I feel sick." "You shouldn't eat so many sweets."
The children then planned the problems and advice cards that they would use in the next lesson for a role play. Role playing lets the children have fun using the things that they have learned by pretending to be different people.
さぁロールプレイングです!子ども達は習ったフレーズを使いながら、お医者さんや患者さんになりきっていました。

The Senior Flyers had a lot of fun. They were eager to pretend to be the doctor and the patients. They wrote and discussed how to be a doctor and a patient as well as explained things that were unclear to their classmates. This allowed for an energetic lesson that they will hopefully remember well.
どんな風に役作りをするかをクラスで話し合いながら、とても有意義で楽しい時間となったようです。

This month the children did a writing project! They chose different countries around the world and wrote a letter to their pen pals!

For their pen pals, the children imagined who their pen pals would be. They did research on popular names used in the countries they have chosen, to then choosing a name they really liked to name their pen pal. They had a lot of fun naming their pen pals!

The students wrote their letters to their pen pals in their journals first! They wrote about school and what they hope to do for summer vacation!

Then all the students came together wrote their letters, drew pictures of their pen pals, and the flags of the countries they've chosen to make one big poster! The project was great!

We are a ten member class and are using the Oxford Dictionary series textbook, Oxford Discovery 2. Last month we spent a whole lesson doing three science experiments.

The materials for our first experiment. It took 20 ice cubes to cool down a cup of hot water.

The second experiment was to gauge how long it takes for an ice pack to thaw out when it is placed in different parts of school. The ice pack in the craft closet was the first to thaw out.
