Canola Project ＠千里丘校
In July, some special visitors come to see us. They bring a small machine with them, but what can it be for?
７月、千里丘校に来てくださった特別な先生。何か不思議な機械もあるけれど何に使うのかな？
Sometime ago we collected our harvest of canola seeds. There were too many to count, but the children made plenty of guesses as to how many we had.
We heated up the seeds in a microwave oven and poured them into the machine…
数日前にみんなで集めた数え切れない程の菜の花の種を、まずは電子レンジで温めます。
The press squeezed the seeds and out dripped a dark green oil. The remains of the seeds came out of the end like a sausage.
"How much oil will we get and what should we do with the old seeds?"
不思議な機械はオイルを搾取するためのものでした！搾り出されるオイルの一方で、ソーセージのようなものが出てきます。こどもたちの目は釘付け！
How does the oil we have made smell? How does it taste? We all try a little of this and the children have very mixed feelings about the taste. Some think it is "quite nice", others make some very funny faces.
独特のにおいを嗅いで、オイルの味見！
その味に戸惑ったり、お気に入りになって味見のおかわりをしたり。
Next, we used this canola oil to cook popcorn. We sit quietly waiting to hear the first pop. Soon the pan is making plenty of sound as the kernels pop and hit the lid.
後日、そのオイルでポップコーンを作りました。
最初のコーンがはじける音をきくために、みんな静かにその時を待ちます。
We all get to taste the results of this long term project. The old seed remains are used to feed the soil when we plant sweetcorn and we keep some canola seeds from this years crop to plant the next year. We are making use of everything we have grown and this sustainable system will provide a good educational experience next time around. What else should we try to grow?
美味しく味わって、今期の菜の花プロジェクトは一旦終了です。
「種を少し残しておこうね。」
「どうして？お腹が空いたら時々食べるため？」
いいえ、次の菜の花プロジェクトで植えるために大切に置いておくのです。
みんなでこれからも自然の循環を繋いでいこうね。
