Geckos

Fun with Food!!!Hello again, and Merry Christmas to you!! We hope you are all keeping warm during this cold weather. In this episode, we would like to show you two of our food-related crafts we have recently completed. As you might remember, November was all about food and healthy eating, and the Geckos focused on learning about vegetables!
Firstly, thank you very much to our Gecko parents for supplying the vegetables we used for our vegetable stamp art - We had carrots, okra, sweet potato, broccoli and lotus root!

We started by taking a closer look at the vegetables – What coloured is the carrot? Do you think the sweet potato will be heavy, or light? Is the okra soft or hard? What does the broccoli smell like? What shape are the holes in the lotus root? The children were fascinated with the different properties of each vegetable.

We donned our smocks and got to work! The children were free to choose which vegetables to use, and enjoyed experimenting with the different shapes and patterns that emerged from their white sheets of paper.

As they experimented they talked about what they were seeing. The carrot made a round shape, eliciting cries of “circle!”, the okra evoked responses of “star!” and “flower!”. We also used different coloured paints to what we usually use, creating magnificent artworks, reflecting each child’s likes and preferences.

To continue with our theme of health eating, we made salads like the ones we have in our lunch boxes each day.

Jacki and Eri prepared some tomatoes (red circles), carrots (orange triangles), cheese (yellow squares – some children said it was pineapple), broccoli, and white radish, and the children chose what they liked for their salad and glued it onto their plate. They used scissors to thinly cut some green tissue paper to make cabbage, then drizzled some special dressing, mixed from yellow paint and glue, on top to create….

…delicious paper salads!!! They look so real, almost good enough to eat!
…Geckos

We hoped you enjoyed our blog for this month.Merry Christmas to you all, best wishes for a wonderful festive season, and have a very Happy New Year for 2013! We look forward to seeing you all again next year!!

Zebras

Zebra’s Community Lesson

This month we decided it would be really great to revise places within our community. And have fun while we learn!

First, we remembered and learnt new names of different places we go to.

We all had turns deciding where to put the different places.
“Should we put the flower shop near the park?”.
“No, let’s put it near the bridge!”, etc.
We all stuck two places to the big community map.

Then we each chose a truck for driving around our new community.
“I’m going to the hospital!”
“I’m going to the supermarket!”

Where are you going, Zebras?
Zebras

Our favourite words in Zebras is
“I like EVERYONE”. Let’s play together Zebras!

We had lots of fun and we learnt so much about places in our community!
